The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Sixteen-year-old moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends.  

After she witnesses her friend being shot by a police officer, things become uneasy at school. 

This book contains inflammatory racial commentary; excessive/frequent profanity; and inexplicit sexual activities.

The Hate U Give grew out of a short story that Thomas wrote as a student in 2009 following the killing of Oscar Grant.
